Malawi

The warm heart of Africa

Malawi, is a sub-Saharan African country that is largely agricultural and making efforts to overcome decades of underdevelopment.

The backbone of the Malawian economy is agriculture, with the majority of its people being subsistence farmers. However due to political and environmental factors, 50.7% of the population lives below the poverty line and 25% in extreme poverty. This makes Malawi one of the poorest countries in the world.

As is the case with low income countries, health care in Malawi is limited in resources and personnel to fully address factors plaguing the population. In fact, studies have shown Malawi has one of the highest population-to-physician ratios in all of sub-Saharan Africa with 1.8 doctors per 100,000 people. In comparison, Canada has 200 doctors per 100,000 people.

The baobab tree
The origin of our outreach

The baobab tree symbolizes the values that Lifeline Malawi embraces and represents the birth of our outreach, as Dr. Chris Brooks - our founder - held his first medical clinic under a baobab tree.

In 1998, upon seeing the great need for a medical presence in the community of Ngodzi, Chris began working in the rural district along with the local people. Before his working clinic, the nearest health centre as at a distance of 40 km, equivalent to an 8-hour walk away. Eventually, a property site was donated by the community for a faith-based organization, paving the way for Lifeline Malawi being established as a registered Canadian charity in 2003.
For 23 years, we've formed a community-based medical clinic to provide primary health care services to Ngodzi and surrounding communities. By practicing long-term and foundational relationships with the community, the local chiefs, and the Malawi Government Ministry of Health. Our shared value for collectiveness in the community has paved the way to impactful connections with our staff, their families, and people nearby - allowing us to expand the impact of our clinic and health programs.
We are happy Lifeline Malawi is respected by the government and local authorities due to our long term commitment to serving the community. Together, we've been able to bring health to people and a transformative hope that is centered on our belief that Jesus saves.
